Junior playoffs

The metro Edmonton junior football playoffs kickoff Thursday for St. Albert’s high school teams.

The top four teams in league play compete for premier honours and the remaining teams play for the city title.

The premier semifinals at Foote Field features the Bellerose Bulldogs (7-0) versus the Salisbury Sabres (3-3-1) at 5 p.m. and the 2011 champion Paul Kane Blues (4-3) battle the St. Joseph Saints (6-1) at 7:30 p.m.

Last week the Saints knocked off Paul Kane 24-21.

In the city playoffs the St. Albert Hawks (1-6) line up against the O’Leary Spartans (3-4) at 5 p.m. and the Bev Facey Falcons (2-4-1) tackle the Austin O’Brien Crusaders (1-6) at 7:30 p.m. at Johnny Bright Park.

Monday the Hawks shutout the Spartans 25-0 at Clarke Park to end a 12-game winless streak.

The finals are Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. for city and 7:30 p.m. for premier at Foote Field.

Playoff admission is $5.

SAPEC volleyball

The SAPEC junior high volleyball playoffs start Thursday with the girls’ quarter-finals.

The boys’ quarter-finals go Monday.

The winners advance into Tier 1 and the remaining teams play in Tier 2.

The semifinals are Tuesday for the girls and Nov. 8 for the boys.

The finals are Nov. 13 for Tier 2 and Nov. 15 for Tier 1.

Carr football final

For the first time since 2000, a St. Albert team will huddle up in the Carr conference final in metro Edmonton high school football.

Tuesday’s semifinal winner between the St. Albert High Skyhawks and the Bellerose Bulldogs will challenge the Bev Facey Falcons (8-0) or Austin O’Brien Crusaders (4-4) in Saturday’s final at 2:30 p.m. at Foote Field. Admission is $5.

Tuesday’s scores were unavailable at press time.

The last St. Albert team to play in the Carr final was the championship-winning Skyhawks.

In league play the Skyhawks and Bulldogs tied for second in the conference at 6-2.

Last month the Skyhawks rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to edge Bellerose 14-13 for their eighth win in the 10th annual Battle of St. Albert.

The Skyhawks, the only Tier 3 team in the Carr, kickoff their provincial playoffs Nov. 10 against Peace River (6-3) in Edmonton. Game time and field location was unavailable at press time.

In the Football Alberta rankings the Skyhawks, last year’s north finalists, are listed sixth and Peace River is seventh.

The last Bellerose senior team to compete in a metro final was the 2007 Miles conference champion Bulldogs.

Bellerose is ranked eighth in Tier 1, the fifth week in a row in the top 10. The last time Bellerose was ranked top-10 provincially was 1999.
