Merchants at home

The St. Albert Merchants host the Leduc Riggers in the Capital Junior B Hockey League on Sunday. Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Merchants played the Strathcona Bruins in St. Albert Friday, but the score was unavailable at press time.

Last weekend the Merchants (1-2-2) suffered 4-3 overtime losses to the Morinville Jets at home and the Wetaskiwin Icemen on the road.

The Merchants are led by Ryan Harrison’s four goals and five points in four games. Matt Bowles and Kurtis Watts have four assists apiece.

Volleyball matches

The Bellerose Bulldogs and St. Albert Skyhawks have home-court advantage in metro Edmonton premier conference volleyball on Monday.

The Bulldogs (1-2) entertain the Paul Kane Blues (0-2) at 4:45 p.m. in the men’s division and the Skyhawks (3-0) host the Blues (1-2) at 6:15 p.m. in the women’s division.

High school football

On Tuesday the Bellerose Bulldogs and St. Albert Hawks huddle up in metro Edmonton high school junior football. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.

The first-place Bulldogs improved to 4-0 in the 30-1 win against the Bev Facey Falcons (1-3-1).

The Hawks are 0-4 after losing 50-6 loss to the Paul Kane Blues (3-1), the defending premier conference champions. The loss was the 10th in a row for the Hawks, dating back to the 2010 regular season.

The Bulldogs and Blues are guaranteed playoff berths in the premier bracket. The Hawks will compete for city conference honours.

WCC tournament

The round robin draw for the 18th annual Lions Western Canadian Challenge high school volleyball tournament swings into action Thursday at 1 p.m. in St. Albert and Morinville.

Twenty-four men’s and 24 women’s teams are entered. Local teams include the Bellerose Bulldogs, St. Albert Skyhawks, Sturgeon Spirits and the tournament-host Morinville Wolves.

The out-of-province teams are Ecole Saint Jean Baptiste of Winnipeg and Ecole St. Joachim of La Broquerie, Man. in the women’s pool.

The defending champions are the Peace Wapiti Academy Titans of Grande Prairie in the men’s division and the Ardrossan Bisons in the women’s division.

The tournament venues are the Morinville, Bellerose and St. Albert Catholic high schools and the Georges H. Primeau and Notre Dame schools in Morinville.

The top two finishers in the four men’s and four women’s pools advance to the round of 16. The winners qualify for the quarter-finals and the losers move into the consolation bracket.

The remaining four teams in all pools will compete for spots in the round of 16 and the consolation side.

Saturday’s finals are at 8 p.m. at Bellerose for the women and Morinville for the men.
