High school football doubleheader
St. Albert’s senior teams in metro Edmonton high school football huddle up Thursday at Riel Recreation Park.
The Carr conference doubleheader kicks off at 5 p.m. between the St. Albert High Skyhawks and O’Leary Spartans.
Both teams suffered season-opening losses last week. The defending champion Bev Facey Falcons whipped the Skyhawks 58-7 and O’Leary was rocked 45-0 by the Paul Kane Blues.
The Skyhawks are listed eighth in the Tier III (school population 450 to 749) Football Alberta provincial rankings. Last year the Skyhawks lost the Tier III north final in their first year in the Tier III provincial playoffs.
At 7:30 p.m. the Bellerose Bulldogs battle Paul Kane.
Last week Grade 12 tailback Ben Graunke rushed for a whopping 258 yards on 26 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 14, one, 50 and two yards in the 34-26 Bellerose win over the Ardrossan Bisons.
Paul Kane is coming off its first win by the senior team in school history. Felix Schmidt and Tyler Turner each caught two TD passes from Grade 11 quarterback Cory Knott and Greg Flemming ran for two TDs against O’Leary.
Last year the Blues finished 0-6 in league play in their first season of high school football.
