Peewee jamboree

The St. Albert Colts are one of seven peewee teams competing in the Capital District Minor Football Association jamboree tonight at Riel Recreation Park.

The 30-minute controlled scrimmages kick off at 6 p.m.

The Colts line up against the Thunder at 6:30 p.m., Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. and Predators at 8:30 p.m.

Tier IV provincials

The Rummies and GSE will represent the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League at the Tier IV provincials this weekend at the ESA Complex.

The Rummies (15-0-1) and GSE (12-1-3) secured provincial berths as the top teams in league play. They also qualified for the Sept. 9 league semifinals.

In group I GSE plays Saturday against CUSA I at 6:30 p.m., Sunday against EDSA II at 12 p.m. and NW Peace at 6 p.m. and Monday against Lakeland I at 9 a.m.

In group II the Rummies kick the ball Saturday against EDSA I at 12:30 p.m. and CUSA II at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday against Medicine Hat at 12:30 p.m. and Lakeland II at 6:30 p.m.

Monday’s crossover medal finals are 3:30 p.m.

Bantam AAA tryouts

The third tryout session for the bantam AAA St. Albert Sabres goes today at Akinsdale Arena. Ice times are 4:30, 6 and 7:30 p.m.

The Sabres will cut down to approximately 38 to 42 players in the first round of releases.

The Sabres practice Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Akinsdale and Friday at 4:15 p.m. at Troy Murray Arena. Saturday’s intersquad game starts at 2 p.m. at Akinsdale.

The new head coach of the Sabres is Donovan Sugiyama, the former assistant coach of the St. Albert Steel in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The assistant coaches are Kelly Smith, Wes Werhun and Mike Carozza.

Last season the Sabres finished fourth at 18-8-7 in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League’s nitro north division and in the conference quarter-finals lost two straight to the SSAC Southgate Lions, the provincial champions.

Midget AAA tryouts

Tryouts for the midget AAA St. Albert Raiders start Friday at Akinsdale Arena.

The blue versus white intersquad games go Sunday at 4:30 and 7 p.m.

The first exhibition is Sept. 10 against the Canadian Athletic Club at 8:15 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.

Back behind the bench is head coach Sandro Pisani.

Last season the Raiders were the sixth St. Albert team and the first since 1998 to win the north division title in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League playoffs. In the final they were swept by the Red Deer Rebels in three games.

The Raiders finished 6-5 in the playoffs after placing second in the north at 21-9-4.
