A 30-year-old St. Albert man killed in a vehicle rollover Sunday morning wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

Brent Ferguson was the lone occupant of a grey pickup truck that was travelling southbound on Range Road 255 just before Highway 633, at the edge of the city. The incident took place shortly before 6 a.m.

Police are still investigating, but the tire tracks indicate the truck slid into the ditch before pulling back out and rolling onto its roof.

St. Albert Fire and EMS along with Morinville and St. Albert RCMP all responded to the scene quickly, but Ferguson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cpl. Laurel Kading of the St. Albert RCMP said police are still investigating what caused him to lose control.

“We are not really sure what caused him to go into the ditch,” she said.

With no other vehicles involved, it will be a little more difficult to determine the exact cause of the accident, but police have ruled out weather and road conditions, Kading said.

Kading said she can’t say for certain that the crash would have been survivable if Ferguson had been wearing a seatbelt, but it definitely would have helped.

“Statistically speaking seatbelts prevent injuries from being as severe if there are going to be any,” she said. “It is concerning to us that there was no seatbelt worn.”
