Millie Seitz deserving of honourBy: | Posted: Saturday, Aug 11, 2012 06:00 am I have just finished reading the article sent to me by my sister-in-law describing the wonderful honour bestowed on Millie Seitz [‘Enduring presence’, July 28 Gazette]. Millie was a dear friend of my late mother, Joanne Pearce, and continued being a dear friend to me. The first year after my mother's death it was Millie who sent cards of remembrance on all those “firsts”: my mom's birthday, Mother's Day, Easter and Christmas. Whenever I came to visit family in St. Albert, Millie would be sure to have me for lunch. I was always amazed at her boundless energy and her commitment to her community and social justice causes. Millie came to stay with me in Gimli and as a teacher, insisted on coming to work with me in Winnipeg where I taught children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. My students took immediately to Millie, with her gentle nature and warm smile. In the end, Millie lost her life to the same disease that took my mother: breast cancer. My husband and I have always been impressed with the beautiful city of St. Albert, with your abundant green spaces and your amazing bike paths. I am most anxious to return to see Millie's “enduring presence” in the Celebration Garden. There is no one more deserving. As one of her many, many friends, thank you for celebrating her life in such a meaningful and fitting way. She will be forever remembered. Deb Thordarson, Gimli, Man. Comments
