Teens charged following ATM fire
Fire causes $24,000 damage to bank machines
Two teenage girls are now facing arson charges following a fire that caused $24,000 damage to two bank machines.
The two Scotiabank machines were heavily damaged in the fire that happened about midnight on Dec. 17, just inside the Grandin Mall entrance. Const. Janice Schoepp said it appears the fire started in the trash container between the two machines and then quickly spread.
“There was a garbage compartment in between the two machines, so they started the garbage on fire in there.”
Firefighters arrived swiftly, put out the small blaze and called the RCMP to conduct an arson investigation. The two young girls were captured on the security footage and officers at the detachment were able to identify them swiftly.
“One of the school resources officers had spoken to the one girl a few days prior and had her name and phone number and recognized her.”
The two girls who were charged were 13 and 15 and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They will both make their first court appearance on Feb. 7.
