Car wash is a complete surprise to neighbours
We live on Akins Drive in St. Albert within 100 metres of Appleyard Square. We were shocked to find out last week that a 15-bay car wash was going to be built just three houses from our residence and the city did not notify us of this.
We would like to ask the city council why we were not notified that a large traffic magnet like a 15-bay car wash had applied to be built but we were notified that a hemp shop had requested to open and was later denied when the location of this hemp shop was the exact same complex where the new car wash is to be built.
Could it be that the taxes that the city will receive from this large business will benefit them more than a small controversial store? Is that why they only notified the bare minimum residents in a 30-metre radius of the proposed car wash? Or could it be that council had made up their minds that this application would be approved so the fewer residents that were notified the better.
We are not sure what Coun. Cam MacKay was referring to in your article dated Jan. 18 in regards to “the appeal hearing was advertised to all landowners with 100 metres of the site,” as we were not given any such notification.
We also do think that printing it in a free newspaper is an unacceptable way to notify residents of such a large change in their neighbourhood. There are times when this paper is not able to be delivered (due to lack of carriers) which is what has happened in our neighbourhood recently. If city council thinks that having information like this in the Gazette is how we are to be informed, then they should guarantee that the paper makes it to every home in that neighbourhood.
Had we known about this car wash application, we would have been at every meeting trying our best to stop this from being built. In talking to my neighbours I can tell you that not one resident I spoke to wants this car wash built, so who exactly is our city council working for?
