World Cup meet

St. Albert speedskater Tamara Oudenaarden is competing for Canada this weekend at the second World Cup meet of the season.

Oudenaarden, 24, is entered in the 1,000 metres in Astana, Kazakhstan.

At the first World Cup recently in Chelyabinsk, Russia, the Bellerose Composite High School alumna placed ninth in the 1,000-metre division B event at 1:19.41.

At the national team trials in October, she was fourth in the 1,000 metres in 1:18.49 and third in the combined two 500-metre races.

Last season Oudenaarden ranked fourth in Canada in the 500 and 1,000 metres.

Oudenaarden was one of eight females named by Speed Skating Canada to the 2010 Olympic team. She was also among the inaugural 24 inductees to the City of St. Albert’s Skating Wall of Fame.

Dobko honoured

Chris Dobko of St. Albert was selected to the Canada West football all-star team at slotback.

The third-year Calgary Dino averaged 12.1 yards per catch and 84.5 yards a game.

The 21-year-old led the conference in receptions with 56 and touchdown catches with eight. He also ranked second in receiving yards with 676.

A graduate of the St. Albert High Skyhawks was among 10 players from the four-time defending Canada West Hardy Cup champion Dinos to make the all-conference team.

Dobko’s bid for a third straight trip to the Vanier Cup with the Dinos ended in the 41-10 loss to the defending CIS champion Laval University Rouge-et-Or last weekend in Calgary.

Kamminga saluted

Susan Kamminga of St. Albert was honoured by Swim Alberta as the 2011 administrator of the year.

The award is presented to an individual who has contributed substantially to club, region and/or provincial development and administration.

Kamminga, the past-president of the Olympian Swim Club, played a leading role in the board’s participation in a strategic planning session where a new vision and mission were established. She worked diligently with other board members to establish most of the existing policies and bylaws the club currently uses and was instrumental in updating those documents.

Kamminga was also the driving force behind steering the club back in the direction of a strong administration by establishing a detailed budget to ensure the office ran properly.

In addition to many administrative tasks and fundraising initiatives, Kamminga was the club’s JP Fiset co-meet manager for the last three years and the meet manager for the U10 series for the last five years.

U17 worlds

Matt Bachewich is going to the World U17 Hockey Challenge as the video coach for Team Pacific.

The former coach for the St. Albert Raiders Hockey Club and St. Albert Steel assistant coach also does video duties for the Alberta Golden Bears.

Last season the St. Albert resident coached the Southside Athletics Club to the first Mac’s tournament championship by an Edmonton and area midget AAA team with perfect 7-0 record.

Team Pacific consists of players from Alberta and British Columbia. The roster includes defenceman Mason Geertsen and forward Curtis Lazar of the Edmonton Oil Kings.

The U17 worlds features five regional teams from Canada and teams from the Czech Republic, Germany, Russia, Sweden and the United States. The teams are split into two groups, with each team playing four preliminary games before the playoff round.

The tournament starts Jan. 29 in Windsor, Ont.
