'Horse race mentality' out of place

"Take out a membership to the Party."

That was the closing remark of an otherwise fine article in the front pages of last Saturday's edition of the St. Albert Gazette. Such campaigning is most unbecoming of a newspaper publication in our country, which considers the right to vote as the most precious aspect of our democratic process.

The authorís reason given for joining the party was that the Progressive Conservatives were going to win the election. Such horse race mentality is out of place in Canada's politics.

It is one thing for a newspaper to recommend one party or another in an editorial, but to outright solicit memberships makes it appear as an arm of the Progressive Conservative Party.
